20030721 Nice Freezer King Salmon

July 21: Nice Freezer King Salmon

After terrific seasons in 2001 & 2002, we did not think fishing could get any better, but we were wrong, 2003 was our best season on the Alagnak River since 1994. We started out with some huge Rainbows on the surface with mouse patterns, big Grayling on smaller drys and lots more bows on flesh flys, Sculpin and nymphs.

Our Sockeye Salmon run arrived a bit ahead of schedule and over 3 million of them went up the river in the next few weeks; needless to say the Sockeye fly-fishing was truly spectacular.

Alagnak King Salmon were also a bit early, (I released 15 Kings for two old friend guests on June 27, and they were there for the bows) they were much bigger than the normal 30# average and they just kept coming. I had an old friend and his grandson with me July 3rd, they brought over 20 big Kings to the boat by 9:30 am with several fish well over 40 pounds and we were all alone while this was happening. The King fishing stayed that way for several weeks, we landed many fish over 50 pounds and at least two over 60. (We release all hen Kings and fish over 40 pounds so unfortunately I have no photos of them.)

Our always reliable run of 500,000+ Chum Salmon arrived in force a few days later than usual, but that was okay, as there were so many Kings & Sockeyes in the river that we would not have known what to do with them anyway. Once they started, they just kept coming and as usual, 25+ fish per angler days were the norm well into August.

Now here is where I really made a miscalculation, after a poor parent year for Silver Salmon, I had anticipated (and told everyone to expect) disappointing fishing for them on the Alagnak. Well, I was glad to be wrong, we were catching big Silvers by the third week in July and it just kept getting better. Add in many spectacular fly-outs and Alagnak braids jet boat trips for Big Rainbow, Grayling & Char and you can see why I say that it was our best season since 1994 and maybe our best ever.

I know that this sounds like a typical fishing story, but all of our past guests, including some who have been fishing with me for over ten years said they had their best trip ever in 2002 and that this year was even better. (I will be glad to put you in touch via email, or phone with guests from each of our 2003 weeks so you can hear of their experience first hand.)

With over a million Pink Salmon run added to the mix, 2004 should really be something to see.
