I am very proud that Angler's Alibi will now offer our new King Camp on the world famous Nushagak River this coming summer. This river is located only a short 20 minute flight from our main location on the Alagnak River.
The Nushagak River of Alaska is on the map for clearly one reason, and that is it’s incredible king salmon runs. The king salmon runs on this river are measured by a sonar system by the Alaska Fish and Game. This sonar count exceeds 100,000 king salmon almost annually! This river has several other rivers and lakes upstream that it supports and is toted as having one of the largest combined salmon runs in the World. Some of the main tributaries of the Nushagak River are the Mulchatna, Nuyakuk, and King Salmon Rivers. This drainage is estimated to be over 280 miles long and supports many villages and sport fish lodges along its path.
What this means is that you can catch king salmon in numbers that are mind boggling at times, even hitting the magical 100 kings per boat totals is still possible! Bait is allowed on this river while targeting kings on conventional gear furthermore enhancing ones chances of landing a lot of kings. We at Angler’s Alibi will target these kings on both flies and conventional gear. We have been hard at it refining methods and techniques to swing for kings using spey rods on the home waters of the Alagnak River and will be taking this knowledge to the Nushagak where we will be wading gravel bars and swinging flies from anchored boats for the mighty king salmon of the Nushagak. The average size of king salmon range from 18 – 25 pounds with a chance to catch them up to 50 pounds.
We will only be open during the historic peak run timing of the kings. There will be chrome bright chum salmon in the system to target on fly as an additional catch but the focus will be on the kings. We will have 3 guest tent cabins with beds and warm comforters if the weather is on the chilly side, but this time of year usually has some warm weather, like in the 70’s, and a lot of daylight being around the summer solstice of June 21. Our guests will need to be in the town of King Salmon the morning of their trip start date by 9:30am if at all possible. King Salmon can be reached daily from Anchorage, and we recommend coming in the afternoon before and over-nighting in King Salmon vs. Anchorage to avoid any possible fog delays for your trip.
Anglers Alibi is an all-inclusive Alaska fishing lodge - we will supply all necessary gear at no extra charge, as well as complimentary beer and wine. IF you want to bring your own gear, we recommend spey rods in 9 or 10 weight, or single hand fly rods in 10 – 11 weights. Tips for the spey rods in 15′ lengths up to T-14 to 18 and single hand fly lines in the 300 to 400 grain sink tips. Fly patterns in the blue/chartreuse and pink patterns in intruder style are best, and for gear we like to use cheater balls for drifting as well as Tea Spoons made by Luhr Jensen in a variety of colors as kings love spinners!
For those who are wanting a small camp environment and detailed attention by your guides with a 2 to 1 guest to guide ratio, this is going to be the place to go to on the Nushagak. We will be bringing over 50 years of Alaska guide experience to the table with our Nushagak River fishing guide staff and utilizing all the same things we do at our home base on the Alagnak River that has made us a waiting list fishing lodge with some of the highest guest return rates in the industry.
