What an Alaska Fly Fishing Lodge Should Look Like

4/10/2012

Many thoughts come to mind when anglers envision what an Alaska fly fishing lodge is supposed to look like, what amenities an Alaska fly fishing lodge is supposed to offer, and what fishing opportunities a true Alaska fly fishing lodge is supposed to offer. At Angler’s Alibi, we do not claim to be the best Alaska fly fishing lodge in the state, but we do claim to be among one of the best Alaska fly fishing lodges. It is no mystery that with a return rate of near 90% that we offer something very special. We take our fishing program very seriously, and second to that is our menu.  With only 10 guests, we can custom plan each and every day around the specific desires of the individual guests. We can also offer up special menu items for special dietary restrictions some of our guests have. For example, we make special sugar free ice cream and deserts for a pair of diabetic guests we have, and also home made gluten free items for some guests with wheat allergies. This is just a small example of what we can do with such a small group of weekly guests.
As far as fishing goes, we utilize 5 boats with no more than 2 anglers per boat.  This allows us to fish out of the boat very comfortably and efficiently. We can fish up to 3 anglers in a boat if that is what the guests want to do, as a lot of our fishing is done while wading the firm sand bottom of the Alagnak River. We are right in the small tidewater zone of the Alagnak River offering chrome bright salmon for a solid 7 to 8 weeks every summer. With no roads, and accessible only by float plane, the fishing is always uncrowded and secluded. Like I mentioned earlier, as far as Alaska fly fishing lodges go, we are one of the few lodges in the state that have this type of location, and can offer the specialties we provide. We are looking forward to many great days this summer at Angler’s Alibi, and hope to keep all informed with a weekly report on this site.

About the Author

John Perry with a Rainbow Trout
John Perry grew up in Michigan on an island called Grosse Ile, in the mouth of the Detroit River and Lake Erie. It was here, surrounded by great fishing and waterfowl hunting that John developed a passion for the outdoors. John moved to Colorado to chase trout in the summers and ski patrol in the winters. John had the privilege to start guiding for Angler’s Alibi with his fly fishing mentor TR Rafferty the second year it was in business. He left a head guide job in Colorado to pursue bigger and better fish.
