String Leech Fly Patterns

​The string leach fly patterns for both salmon and rainbow trout have made a huge impact on the number of fish caught over the traditional fly patterns. With a fly pattern having the hook set back, the short striking Alaska rainbow trout, Alaska king Salmon, silver salmon, and even the short striking pink salmon do not stand a chance of missing the hook! I have seen the progression over the past several seasons that we are going to the string leach patterns almost exclusively over a traditional fly. While fishing for king salmon especially, every grab counts, and with the string leach, there are very few misses!

​On the Alagnak River, the fishing for rainbow trout, king salmon, and silver salmon is near 100% string leach patterns with Angler’s Alibi. We strive to continue to use the latest greatest techniques and patterns to assure our guests are catching the maximum amount of salmon daily on the mighty Alagnak River and nearby Moraine Creek and Brooks River in Katmai National Park.

About the Author

​John Perry grew up in Michigan on an island called Grosse Ile, in the mouth of the Detroit River and Lake Erie. It was here, surrounded by great fishing and waterfowl hunting that John developed a passion for the outdoors. John moved to Colorado to chase trout in the summers and ski patrol in the winters. John had the privilege to start guiding for Angler’s Alibi with his fly fishing mentor TR Rafferty the second year it was in business. He left a head guide job in Colorado to pursue bigger and better fish.
