Angler’s Alibi, an Alagnak River fishing lodge, is getting ready for another great summer in 2014. We have added an additional week to take advantage of the fabulous silver salmon fishing that has been happening the past several seasons while we are leaving the river for with what was the end of our summer. This new week will take advantage of not only silver salmon fishing, but also the fabulous Alagnak River braids and what they have to offer in regards to numerous rainbow trout eagerly taking egg imitations during the salmon spawn.
Like all of Bristol Bay, we were more than ready for some normal Alaska weather with wind, rain, and the need to wear more than a t-shirt. The month of August came, and with it the rain….and the silvers! Our first day of August was a nice rainy day which seemed to draw in the first big push of silver salmon of the season. Sure, we had caught a few up to this point, but August 1 was definitely the start of the best silver salmon run the Alagnak River has ever had in my 20 years on the river.
The Alagnak River in July of 2013 lived up to it’s glory, despite the heat that raised the river temperature to almost 70 degrees. The season started off with a bang. In the pre-fishing time of June, before the guests arrived on July 1, we had a friendly competition amongst the guides to see who could catch dinner in an hours time. This was June 25, and the weather had been very hot all of June. Hopes of catching a jack king salmon or maybe a big jack king near 2o pounds was all that we could expect. In an hour, our boat landed 2 king salmon, 1 at 37 pounds, and 1 at 32 pounds. This was incredible, and a sign of how our first week of the season was going to start.
Angler’s Alibi is situated on the Alagnak River, one of Alaska’s best Alaska salmon fly fishing rivers in the entire state. We are fortunate to experience all 5 species of Pacific salmon on this river, and most notably are the king salmon, silver salmon, and chum salmon runs. These 3 salmon species account for most of out catch rates throughout the summer. We also have a phenomenal sockeye salmon run on the Alagnak River, with this years estimate to be near 2 million! The pink salmon runs are something to behold! The numbers are truly mind blowing with unbelievable action on sub surface and top-water fly patterns for weeks! The Alagnak River is noted for these prolific salmon runs fresh out of Bristol Bay every summer, and Angler’s Alibi is situated right on the tidewater section of the river so that we can experience world class Alaska salmon fishing right at our lodge daily on the tides.
Our Alaska fly fishing lodge, Angler’s Alibi, is situated on the Alagnak River near Bristol Bay Alaska. This location supports a fishery that is literally right out our door. We experience all 5 species of salmon on the Alagnak River, as well as great trophy Alaska rainbow trout and grayling fishery. This location in Bristol Bay also allows our guests to experience unbelievable Alaska fly out lodge fishing as well in nearby Katmai National Park. We are fortunate to have a great reputation in the lodge business with one of the highest return rates of guests in the state. This return rate should speak volumes in not only our Alaska fishing program, but also our level of customer service we provide to our guests on a daily basis both on the water and off.
At Angler’s Alibi Alaska, we specialize in salmon fishing on the fly. We utilize both single hand and spey rods daily in our quest to catch salmon on the fly. We do not exclude the use of conventional gear to catch salmon at all, and we feel that we specialize in this venue as well. We do focus a bit more on Alaska salmon fishing on the fly though. The king salmon are very difficult to target on the fly all day long, throwing heavy sink tip lines to get down to the depths that the kings prefer.
The Alagnak River ranks as one of the best rivers in Alaska to fish. Part of what makes this river so amazing is that there are no roads that lead to it, and no cruise ships that can access it via small boats. The only way to get to the Alagnak River is by float plane. The Alagnak River starts out high in the Katmai range in Southwest Alaska. This area, also called Katmai National Park, is one of the most famous places on earth for anglers. The Alagnak river actually originates from 2 distinct lakes. These 2 lakes, the Nonvianuk and the Kukaklek Lake, both have tributaries that are necessary for the spawning life cycle of sockeye salmon. These tributaries are also noted as having some of the best trophy trout and char fishing in all of Alaska.
Catching Alaska salmon while fly fishing is something that has been done for generations in this great state. The pure act of intercepting these magnificent fish on there way up river from the salt is very addicting. Salmon fly fishing is similar in many ways to fishing for steelhead trout. The main difference is that there are many more salmon than there are steelhead trout. The other major difference is that the steelhead go back to the ocean, where the salmon end their life cycle after spawning.
At Angler’s Alibi, we consider our Alaska guided fishing lodge to be the top tier of all river lodges. We have the highest guest to staff ratio with 10 to 9, and a 2 to 1 guide ratio. It is this employee base that allows us to offer unbelievable customer service to all our guests. This is only part of the reason why we have such a high return rate of guests. Our guided fishing program offers more quality time than just about any other place you could ever travel to in Alaska for guided fishing. We offer 9 1/2 hours a day of guided fishing before cocktail hour, then if guests wish to fish the evenings, we offer more guided fishing time until our 10pm curfew. This extra time on the water is seldom used though as our guests are usually very tired from a full day on the river, catching salmon all day long.
Our Alaska fly out lodge is one that does not have to fly out daily to experience the amazing fishing that Bristol Bay has to offer. Our Alaska fly out lodge is located on the tidewater section of one of the best salmon rivers in all of Alaska, the Alagnak River. Angler’s Alibi offers fly outs to nearby Katmai National Park and Preserve, and we take an average of one fly out per week. This is only an average, because when the salmon start to spawn in the mountains, we usually end up taking at least two fly outs per week.
